Restorative Treatment: Complete Dentures
A Complete Denture is a dental appliance or prosthesis that replaces all the teeth in a single arch, either the upper arch or the lower arch. It is removable, and is carefully designed and fabricated to closely resemble the appearance of your natural teeth and tissues when they were once healthy. A Complete denture may be either: a) Conventional or b) Immediate. A Conventional Denture is fabricated when the patient has lost all their natural teeth in an arch, and the gum tissues have completely healed and shrunk from the extraction process. If the extractions were recent, this patient will have been without teeth for six to twelve weeks. An Immediate Denture is fabricated in advance and immediately placed minutes after the teeth have been extracted, thus preventing the patient from having to be without teeth during the healing process. The Immediate Denture will require a future reline after the gum tissues have healed and the jaw bone recedes with subsequent shrinkage to both bone and gum. This is part of the normal healing process. Complete Dentures accomplish multiple objectives for the patient, namely it fills in the spaces created by missing teeth, enhances chewing function, restores occlusion and balances chewing forces, reduces or eliminates speech impairment, all while filling the spaces where the original natural teeth had been lost. A Complete Denture might also be a replacement of a previously worn fixed partial denture, removable partial denture, or complete denture.
Complete Denture fabrication is typically two visits for Immediate Denture fabrication and five visits for Conventional Denture fabrication. It should be noted that although the Immediate Denture is two visits for initial fabrication, two or three additional visit will be required after a twelve week healing period for reline and adjustment. Both Conventional and Immediate Dentures require highly accurate impressions to be taken at the first visit along with meticulous measurements in regards to tooth size, shape, and shade as well as arch form and configuration. Depending on the Complete Denture required, the case will proceed to completion at the second visit (Immediate Denture), or proceed to a second round of Master Impressions, followed by a Bite Registration and measurements visit, a wax try-in with teeth, and ultimately final try-in and delivery. Complete Dentures in general are extremely durable, but like all dental restorations, they may have to be remade, repaired or re-adjusted due to normal wear.
