Restorative Treatment: Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain Veneers over the past decade have become an extremely popular treatment option for patients who want that perfectly beautiful smile, but do not have perfectly beautiful natural teeth. Also adding to their popularity in recent months has been their inclusion as featured treatment on television programs like “Extreme Makeover”. Patients nation-wide have been able to visualize first-hand the dramatic impact beautiful Porcelain Veneers and the beautiful smile can make on one’s self-esteem and overall appearance. Porcelain Veneers are very thin custom fabricated wafers of incredibly hard tooth shaped porcelain. Their single most distinct advantage over Composite Bonded Veneers is not just their strength and durability, but their resistance to stain. Approximately the thickness of a false fingernail, they are bonded onto the front of the anterior teeth creating a uniformly symmetrical, beautifully white smile. Porcelain Veneers can correct many other dental imperfections like crooked teeth, chipped teeth, discolored teeth, malformed teeth, teeth spaces, and they can also be an alternative to completely crowning an anterior tooth. As with all dental restorations, Porcelain Veneers also suffer material fatigue from wear, and will ultimately require replacement, but due to their durability, they will last many years, giving you a beautiful long lasting smile.

A Porcelain Veneer is typically a two visit procedure, but in the likely event of multiple veneers, a third visit may be required. Generally, this procedure does not require the administration of a local anesthetic. The teeth to be treated are gently prepared by removing only a superficial amount of enamel to accommodate the thinness of the veneer. In fact, so small is the amount of tooth enamel removed that patients rarely, if ever, have to wear a temporary prosthesis while awaiting their second visit. A polyvinylsiloxane impression is taken of the teeth, and is sent to a dental laboratory along with a color shade, selected and agreed upon by both patient and dentist, for porcelain veneer fabrication. At the second visit, after minor preparation of the tooth surface to both cleanse and enhance retention, the Porcelain Veneers are bonded into place utilizing a new and uniquely designed bonding cement, which in effect fuses the restoration to the tooth, creating a strong and durable tooth and restoration. The cement is typically light cured, with any excess cement trimmed and polished. While the patient may eat immediately, in the case of Porcelain Veneer placement, we still recommend that the patient refrain from eating for up to one hour to allow proper final set of the cement.
